Fuerteventura is an island that belongs to the Canary Islands in Spain. The island lies near Africa and is surrounded by wild Atlantic ocean waves from every side. Most of the time, the conditions are ideal for surfing. Besides watersports, the Fuerteventura beaches offer a lot of eye candy for all nature or aesthetic enthusiasts.

Playa de Sotavento

The beach lies in the southern part of the island on the east side. It lies near Costa Calma, a small town with many resorts. The beach is 9 kilometers long with fine golden sand. The waters are clear with turquoise hues. During certain tides, you can observe lagoons that make a place for unique swimming and wanding experiences.

The most common activities on the beach include windsurfing and kite surfing. The place is known for the best water conditions. Annual watersports festivals happen there. The swimming conditions are generally safe. The long beach has enough free space for everyone who wants to sunbathe.

The amenities are limited, but nearby areas offer plenty – shops, restaurants, and rentals.

Esquinzo

Located a few kilometers south of Sotavento Beach, this pristine beach offers a serene and unspoiled environment. Its proximity to a bus stop and nearby hotel makes it easily accessible. One of the beach’s most distinctive features is the large dune directly beneath the hotel, providing a unique landscape. The beach is generally uncrowded. However, visitors should note that some nudists also frequent this beach. Please note that there are no amenities such as showers, umbrellas, or loungers, so come prepared with everything you might need for a comfortable visit.

La Pared

The beach lies on the western coast of Fuerteventura near a small village with the same name. It is not very long. The sand is golden, but be aware of some rocks. The waters have strong waves and currents. They are suitable more for surfers or experienced swimmers. From facilities, expect a bar and restaurant nearby.

Playa del Viejo Rey

This wild and unspoiled beach lies near La Pared, and its conditions are very similar. There are no facilities except one parking lot. It is a 10-minute walk to the beach from the car park. The sand is golden and dark. The strong winds and large waves make it an ideal paradise for surfers, reminiscent of some well-liked surfing beaches in Portugal.

Playa del Castillo

This beautiful beach lies on the eastern coast of the island. Nearby town is Caleta de Fuste, also known as El Castillo. The beach is small, only 800 kilometers long. The sand is golden. The waters are calm and ideal for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and water sports. Paddleboarding, kayaking, or jet skiing are common there. The beach has many amenities like showers, restrooms, sunbeds, and changing rooms. The long promenade is made for a walk along the coast and rest in one of the many bars, restaurants, or shops. The place is well-maintained and offers a view of the nearby harbor. The place is also great for families. There are also lifeguards on duty. Besides watersports, there is an opportunity to take golf courses as well.

Playa de Ajuy

Another from Fuerteventura beaches lies on the western coast in the small fishing village Ajuy. The place is small, only 270 meters. The sand is black, volcanic, and in striking contrast to turquoise waters. The waters can be challenging (big waves, strong currents). Just 15-minute walk from the beach are ancient sea caves, impressive cliffs, and rock formations. The area provides scenic hiking and photography opportunities. Amenities include parking, restrooms, and a few restaurants in the village.

Playa de los Ojos

This wild beach lies on the southeastern coast of the island near Cofete. The best way how to reach it is by car 4×4. But also, you can take the bus 111 that goes to Cofete twice a day. Just get off at stop Avenida Del Puertito. Then, walk around 20 minutes northeast. The beach is only 400 meters long with golden sand and some pebbly areas. This side of the island usually has strong waves and currents, and swimming is often not advised. The area is better for hikers and photographers. The landscape is rugged, with cliffs that make it look very dramatic. When the tide is low, you can spot fascinating cave formations along the shoreline. Nearby, a smaller beach called Playa de los Ojos is known for its remote location, sandy shores, and striking orange cliffs.

Playa de Cofete

Cofete is one of the wildest beaches on the island’s west side. Its remote and rugged beauty offers a stunning, untouched, and breathtaking landscape. Cofete is a couple of kilometers-long beach with a beautiful but sinister backdrop of volcanic mountains. The best way to reach it is by bus, car, or hiking. Renting a car might be challenging for some foreigners because the paved road transitions into a dirt road. Many rental companies do not permit drivers and vehicles to drive on such terrain.

Another option is to take a bus number 111 from Moro Jable. But it only goes to Cofete twice a day. There is also a village named Cofete, where only one restaurant operates. The settlement does not have electricity, adding to its remote and rustic charm. Nearby, maybe a 30-minute-long walk is the mysterious Villa Winter. According to its current owner, the villa was connected somehow to Nazis, and some of their secret acts happened there. For more information, you can check my detailed article about Cofete.

Corralejo beaches

Corralejo Natural Park lies on the northeast of the island. This area stretches for a couple of kilometers, featuring expansive dunes and is conveniently spreading near a highway. On the other side of the road are the beaches. The ones near the hotels come with many amenities like toilets, restaurants, changing rooms, lifeguards, stops, and car rentals. I provide more detailed information about the natural reserve Corralejo Sand Dunes.

Lobos Island beaches

Lobos is a small island easily reachable by boat from the Corralejo harbor. It is not possible to spend more than a couple of hours there. Amenities are limited, with only a few restaurants near the main entrance. The area features a total of five beaches, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. The largest and most popular is La Concha Beach, known for its sandy shores and calm waters.

Playa de Gran Tarajal

Gran Tarajal is a small town populated mainly by locals on the southeast coast of Fuerteventura. The beach is part of it. Thanks to its location, some amenities like showers, restrooms, changing rooms, bars, restaurants, a small port, and parking are available. The beach is around 1 kilometer long with black volcanic sand. Waters are usually mild and gentle, suitable for swimming. The beach is a family-friendly place.

Popcorn Beach del Bajo de la Burra

The last on this list of Fuerteventura beaches is this lovely popcorn beach on the northern coast near Corralejo. The white popcorn sand is made of white corals. The beach is small with calm and clear waters. The area is rocky and more for exploring and photography than swimming or watersports. There are no facilities, only a nearby parking lot. The access is through a rough roadway.
