Staying in budget-friendly accommodation doesn’t have to mean choosing a bad neighbourhood or compromising on comfort. This is the main reason I created this guide.

Here, I share tips on affordable hotels with clean and attractive interiors, hostels that offer private rooms, design hotels with inviting shared spaces, and accommodation in historic buildings. I’ve also included apartments with kitchens and budget-friendly options outside the city centre that still offer good public transport connections.

If you’re visiting Vienna for the first time and want to explore the best areas to stay, rather than focusing primarily on price, check out my guide to Where to Stay in Vienna: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors.

Best Areas to Stay in Vienna on a Budget

The historic city centre is generally one of the most expensive areas to stay in Vienna. If you’re travelling on a budget, it may be worth exploring neighbourhoods outside the centre of Vienna. Many of them offer more affordable accommodation and convenient public transport connections to the main sights.

However, lower prices can sometimes come with a few compromises. Some neighbourhoods have a less favourable reputation among local residents, so it’s worth checking the immediate surroundings before booking. Here are some areas to consider when looking for budget accommodation in Vienna.

Favoriten (District 10)

Budget Hotels Near the Main Train Station

Favoriten is worth considering if you are looking for affordable accommodation near Vienna’s main railway station, Wien Hauptbahnhof. The area offers convenient connections by metro, tram, bus, and train, making it a practical base for exploring the city.

The district has a mixed reputation among locals, particularly around Keplerplatz and Reumannplatz. However, Favoriten is also known for its multicultural character. Around Viktor-Adler-Markt, you can find numerous Middle Eastern shops and restaurants, and Arabic is commonly heard in the area. I haven’t visited the market myself yet, but local YouTube videos documenting the neighbourhood showed a lively but seemingly calm daytime atmosphere.

If you choose a hotel in Favoriten, pay attention to its exact location. I would particularly consider accommodation around Hauptbahnhof and the newer Sonnwendviertel neighbourhood, which offers convenient public transport connections.

  • A&T Hotel & Hostel – A budget-friendly option in Favoriten offering dormitory beds, private rooms, and family rooms with private bathrooms. It is around a 10-minute walk from Reumannplatz U1 station, with convenient connections to the city centre. However, keep in mind that rooms do not have air conditioning, which several guests have mentioned as a drawback during hot summer days.
  • B&B Hotel Wien-Hbf – A modern budget hotel near Vienna Central Station, offering double, twin, triple, and family rooms. It has air-conditioned rooms, private bathrooms, and consistently good guest reviews, particularly for cleanliness. It is a slightly more expensive alternative to hostel accommodation.

Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (District 15)

Affordable Stays Near Westbahnhof

Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is worth considering if you are looking for more affordable accommodation with convenient public transport connections. The district includes Westbahnhof, one of Vienna’s major transport hubs, and is also close to Schönbrunn Palace in neighbouring Hietzing.

However, not every part of the district offers the same experience. The area around Gumpendorfer Straße U-Bahn station has a visible drug scene. During my own visit after sunset, I saw several people who appeared to be affected by drug use, as well as police officers dealing with the situation nearby. Local residents have also discussed similar concerns, particularly around the station and Westbahnhof.

If you are considering a hotel here, check its exact location and recent guest reviews. I would pay particular attention to the immediate surroundings and the route between the hotel and the nearest public transport stop.

  • JO&JOE Vienna – A modern hostel near Vienna Central Station and the IKEA store, offering both shared dormitories and private rooms. It features contemporary communal spaces and convenient public transport connections. Keep in mind that luggage storage is charged separately.
  • Vienna Hostel Ruthensteiner – A popular hostel near Westbahnhof, known for its garden and welcoming communal spaces. It offers dormitory beds as well as private twin, triple, and quadruple rooms. Some shared-room facilities are fairly basic, so check the room type and bathroom arrangements before booking.

Margareten (District 5)

Local Neighbourhood and Good Connections

Margareten is a mostly residential district south of Vienna’s city centre. It offers a more local atmosphere, with independent shops, cafés, traditional restaurants, and interesting architecture. Around Margaretenplatz and Schlossquadrat, you can explore historic buildings and charming courtyards. The district is also worth considering if you are interested in Vienna’s social housing architecture.

Public transport connections are convenient, particularly around the U4 stations at Pilgramgasse and Margaretengürtel. However, the district varies considerably from one area to another. Matzleinsdorfer Platz is primarily a busy transport hub, while some streets around Eichenstraße and Margaretengürtel may feel less appealing as a place to stay.

If you choose accommodation in Margareten, I would look closer to Margaretenplatz or the U4 stations. Check the exact location and recent guest reviews before booking.

  • Space Home Apartment – A budget-friendly capsule accommodation for solo travellers looking for an affordable place to sleep. Each capsule offers some privacy, with a lockable door, ventilation, and a small storage safe. However, the capsules are not soundproof, and the sleeping space may feel restrictive for taller guests. The property operates without a traditional reception, so check-in instructions are provided remotely.
  • Pension am Wienfluss – A traditional guesthouse offering private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. It is a good alternative if you prefer more privacy and comfort than a hostel or capsule accommodation. Guests particularly appreciate its cleanliness and convenient location near Naschmarkt and Vienna’s city centre. It is generally more expensive than the capsule-style options.

Leopoldstadt (District 2)

Affordable Options Near the City Centre

Leopoldstadt is a good option if you want to stay relatively close to Vienna’s city centre without booking accommodation in the most expensive districts. The area offers excellent public transport connections, green spaces, and several interesting neighbourhoods. You can explore the Danube Canal, visit the Prater amusement park, or discover the modern campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

However, accommodation prices and the surrounding atmosphere vary across the district. The area around Praterstern is particularly convenient for public transport, but the station and its immediate surroundings can feel uncomfortable late at night. Local discussions and recent reports have also raised concerns about drug-related activity in this area.

For a more relaxed stay, I would also look at accommodation around the Karmeliterviertel, Stuwerviertel, or Nordbahnviertel. These areas offer different neighbourhood atmospheres while remaining well connected to the city centre. As always, check the exact hotel location and recent guest reviews before booking.

  • MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Franz – A hybrid hotel and hostel offering private rooms, shared dormitories, and communal facilities. Guests can use the shared kitchen, bar, and games area. It is a practical option for travellers looking for hostel-style facilities with the privacy of a hotel room. Some reviews mention inconsistent cleaning, so check recent guest feedback before booking.
  • Prater Park Small Penthouse – A spacious apartment in Leopoldstadt, close to the Prater and Vorgartenstraße metro station. It features a separate bedroom, a living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a balcony. Early guest reviews praise its cleanliness, facilities, and convenient location. However, one guest mentioned that the building’s common areas could use some maintenance. With only a handful of reviews so far, its excellent rating is still based on a limited number of stays.

Simmering (District 11)

Further from the Centre, but Connected by U-Bahn

Simmering is one of Vienna’s less touristy districts, but it can be an interesting option if you are looking for more affordable accommodation. Located southeast of the city centre, it offers direct connections to central Vienna via the U3 metro line.

The district is home to two distinctive attractions. The Vienna Gasometers are four historic gas holders converted into residential, commercial, and cultural spaces. The area also hosts concerts and other events. Another highlight is the Zentralfriedhof, one of Europe’s largest cemeteries, known for its impressive Art Nouveau architecture and honorary graves. You can also join guided tours to discover its history.

Simmering is primarily a residential and industrial district rather than a traditional tourist neighbourhood. However, if you don’t mind staying further from the historic centre, it may offer better accommodation prices. I would particularly look at hotels and apartments near the Gasometer or U3 stations, which provide convenient connections to the rest of Vienna.

  • OLIVER pulse I Apartments with Self Check-in – Modern apartment-style accommodation with contemporary interiors, well-equipped studios, and self check-in. Guests particularly appreciate the cleanliness, comfortable beds, and modern facilities. It can be a practical option if you prefer an independent stay rather than a traditional hotel. However, some guests have reported difficulties with the check-in system, customer support, and room temperatures during summer. Check the cooling facilities and recent reviews before booking.
  • PLAZA INN Wien Gasometer – A modern hotel in Vienna’s Simmering district, close to the Gasometer complex and the U3 metro station. It offers comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and convenient connections to the city centre. Guests particularly appreciate its cleanliness, facilities, and overall value for money. It is a practical option if you don’t mind staying outside Vienna’s historic centre.

How I Choose Budget Accommodation

When choosing budget accommodation, I look beyond the nightly price and overall guest rating. I have a few practical criteria that help me decide whether a place is worth booking.

– Read reviews and check cleanliness. I pay particular attention to comments about clean rooms, bathrooms, bedding, and general maintenance. A low price is not worth it if the accommodation is poorly maintained.

– Check the location and safety. As a solo female traveller, I consider the neighbourhood and its immediate surroundings before booking. I use Google Maps to explore the area, check the walking distance to public transport, and see what the streets around the property look like. I pay particular attention to the route I might need to take after dark.

– Check the available facilities. I don’t usually cook when travelling, but I still appreciate having access to a kitchen, fridge, and microwave. These facilities are useful for storing food, preparing a quick meal, or keeping drinks and snacks.

– Consider laundry options. For longer stays, I check whether the accommodation has a working washing machine. If it doesn’t, I look for a laundromat nearby.

– Compare the price with the location. Accommodation further from the main attractions can offer better value, but I always consider public transport connections and how much time I would spend travelling around.

– Check communication with the host. I prefer accommodation where the host or staff can communicate in English. Translation apps can be helpful, but they are not always reliable, especially when discussing check-in instructions, unexpected problems, or specific requests.

Final Thoughts

In this guide, I’ve included some of the lowest-priced accommodation options in Vienna, particularly hostels and budget stays. However, I didn’t look only at the cheapest rates or highest guest ratings. I also took the time to read negative reviews to get a more realistic picture of what each place offers.

None of these properties is perfect, and every traveller has different expectations. However, I would avoid accommodation with recurring complaints about cleanliness or safety, even if the price seems tempting. These are two things I wouldn’t want to compromise on when choosing a place to stay.

Ultimately, the best budget accommodation is not necessarily the cheapest one. It’s a place that offers a reasonable balance between price, location, cleanliness, and comfort.
